Wii remote oddity?

I was playing Wii Sports with my boyfriend and some friends last weekend, and we were using 4 remotes. We turned off the console by holding down the on on the remote. Two hours later, we realized that three of the remotes were still on. We ended up taking the batteries out so they wouldn't get drained. Usually, the remotes shut off if you leave them alone for ten minutes during gameplay or shut off the console. Has anyone ever had this happen? Do you know how to fix it?
