Mower pull rope is hard to pull MTD 22" 5hp Briggs and Stratton?

rope broke next to handle. Took starter off and pulled the rope through the hole and reattached the handle. Pulled the rope to see if the spring was ok. It pulled fine. Put the starter back on the mower and now it is hard to pull.
